Futsol 2016

The annual Futsol blitz for 3rd and 4th class was held on Monday 5th December in Roscommon Town. Teams from all over the county participated.

The Cloonakilla girls played some lovely football and ended up beating Ballybay 1-0 in the semi-final. They were very unlucky in the final losing on a score line of 2-1 to Summerhill.

Next up was the boys’ competition. Both teams played brilliantly and we were represented by one team in the semi-final. Cloonakilla started very strongly and scored some early goals to set up a final with Cornafulla. The final proved to be very exciting and Cloonakilla were thrilled to win the match 3-1. It was a great achievement.

It was a very enjoyable day for all. Well done to all the boys and girls who played in the blitz. The medal presented was held after the carol service.

Spar  5 a side Competition 2016

On April 27th 2016, 8 boys from 6th class and supporters travelled to Castlebar to compete in the Spar Connacht 5 a side competition. The boys were representing Roscommon as they had progressed through two previous blitz.  5 of the boys had participated in the tournament last year so they had experience.

Their first match was against Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal who were from Sligo. The game was a thrilling one finishing 9 – 4 in favour of Cloonakilla. Dara McGuinness ran the show grabbing 5 goals within the first half.

The next game against Galway was certainly not easy as Cloonakilla went down 2 – 0 within the first four minutes to an abysmal decision on a penalty. Cloonakilla fought well and scrambled a draw and could have easily gone on to win the game. The result was not ideal but at least it wasn’t a loss. This Galway game proved to be the toughest of the day.

Gaelscoile Liatroma was the next opponent but didn’t pose much of a challenge to the Cloonakilla side, the  score finished 7 -1.

The last game proved to be important as Cloonakilla needed to put every chance away to rack up the goal difference.  9 – 1 was the final score.

You may think that would be enough, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. Kileeneen from Galway rose to the challenge and bet Mayo 14 – 0. Even though Cloonakilla were unlucky, the victory was deserved for Kileeneen.

It  was a great experience and we are very proud of how we performed.
