We had a very busy term. We wish you all a happy Easter!
We have had a great time in Senior Infants this term. We explored lots of different themes in Aistear from Hobbies and Birthday Parties to Autumn and Halloween. We made sure that everyone ate healthy, wholesome food in the Healthy Café. We designed football stadiums and swimming pools using wooden blocks. We wrote poems and invitations. We made birthday cakes in the sand and designed and wrote birthday cards for our friends. We made magic spells and even made our own magic goo! It was so much fun!
Senior Infants focused on using their “Maths Eyes” during Maths week. We worked in pairs with 5th class to complete a Maths Trail in the school. We displayed our counting skills by playing maths games designed by 6th class. We really enjoyed exploring and using 2D shapes to make shape pictures. We are looking forward to having even more fun in Term 2!
We worked really hard in Senior Infants this term. We learned all about the zoo. We designed and mapped out a zoo, wrote letters to the zoo, built a zoo using Lego and made zoo animals.
We also studied mini beasts. We went on a nature walk with Mr. O’Leochain to find mini beasts in the school environment. We recorded what we found. We learned lots of information about mini beasts and displayed our fact files in the classroom.
We learned about folktales in History. We learned about the story of TIr na nOg. We imagined that we were Oisin and wrote postcards to Fionn and na Fianna.
Spring Senior Infants.
During February we learned all about the farm. We designed our own farms. We built farms using small world toys and Lego. As part of our role-play activity we took some sick animals to the vet and discussed the ways we can care for animals correctly. We also painted a farmyard and fields, exploring using different colours and patterns for each field.
During March we focused on Spring. We wrote about changes that occur in Spring. We planted seeds in our “Flower Shop” and made beautiful bouquets of flowers using paper and pipe cleaners. We painted sunflowers using forks and cotton buds.
We explored floating and sinking in Science. We had great fun investigating which items floated and which ones sank. We also explored forces using playdough and found that a force can change the shape of an object.
In April, we celebrated all things scientific with our Science Fair. Parents were invited to come and learn about experiments with Senior Infants. They learned about the lifecycle of a frog, how plants drink, floating and sinking, magnets, creepy reflections and mixing liquids.
This month Senior Infants were focusing on learning about Winter and Christmas.
In Art we learned about Vincent Van Gogh and discussed some of the techniques he used in his paintings. We created our own version of “A Starry Night.” We explored using chalk pastels to create a snowman. We identified warm and cool colours. We made snow globes by painting using cotton buds.
In S.E.S.E we learned about Florence Nightingale. We made a timeline of her life and wrote about what we learned.
In Aistear, we imagined that we were working in Santa’s Grotto. We designed toys, built them from playdough and blocks and wrapped presents. We built Santa’s Grotto using wooden blocks. We also wrote letters to Santa. We designed our own Winter hat and played Winter bingo.
We took part in a Christmas concert. We worked really hard at rehearsing our songs, poems and actions and really enjoyed the performance.
We learned about growing up and made timelines as part of SESE.
We learned all about different types of weather. We designed patterned umbrellas. We read the story Ms. Honey’s Hat and created a new hat for her. We created Jack’ O lanterns for Halloween using pastels and watercolour paint.
Senior Infants were very busy during Maths Week. We learned all about 2D and 3D shapes. We made 2D shape pictures, constructed buildings using 3D wooden blocks, made 2D shapes using lollipop sticks and played 2D shape bingo.
We had great fun preparing for Halloween. As part of Aistear, we designed Halloween costumes, wrote spells and made potions in the potions lab.
Senior Infants are currently busy working in the café. We are designing menus and making printed pictures using vegetables.
Senior Infants have been very busy workers after returning from Christmas break. We have been learning about lots of interesting people, places and animals.
In Science we have been learning all about the Robin and the Tiger. We created our own robins using paper plates, paint, crepe paper and googly eyes! After learning about the robin we then studied the tiger. We focused on the tigers stripes and decided to compare them with other animal prints. We created a collage of animal prints using charcoal and pastels. We chose the tiger and zebra stripes along with the leopard and giraffes spots. From there we began learning all about Italy in Geography. We studied the shape of Italy and recognised how similar it is to a long boot. Firstly we sponged the Mediterranean Sea. We then used Italy’s staple food – pasta, to create Italy’s shape as a country. We are just after finishing our Venetian masks for the Mardi Gras using pastels, feathers, glitter and lollipop sticks.
Our Aistear theme for this month was Weather. We studied and recorded the weather daily. We became weather forecasters and used weather symbols to highlight the expected weather in different parts of Ireland! We made rainy day pictures using cupcake holders, paint and pipe cleaners. We created a weather spinner using Irish weather vocabulary, read weather books and wrote weather words in our free writing copies.
We have been looking at numbers 7, 8 and 9. We have been learning how to form these numbers using different rhymes. We used bears and counters to create their number stories. Our stations for this month have been based on activities to help us with these numbers.
In Gaeilge, we have been learning all about ag siopadóireacht, mé féin, an teilifís agus eadaí. We have learnt songs and poems in Irish for each of these topics too!
November & December 2016
September & October in Senior Infants
Senior Infants were very busy this term learning new jingles, reading The Big Horse and learning about historical figures such as Florence Nightingale. Firstly we talked about the rules in the classroom and created our Class Charter using our hand prints.
We created self portraits using fabric and fibre.
In Class we read the story of Town Mouse & Country Mouse which we really enjoyed. For art, we created town mice and country mice. We used leaves to show where the Country Mouse lives and pictures of buildings for the Town Mouse.
We learnt all about Autumn– the animals and leaves we associate with Autumn. We created Harry the Hedgehog using leaves, matchsticks, sponges and paints. We also created Autumn trees using leaf rubbings, leaf prints and actual leaves.
In Aistear we learnt all about the dentist. We created dentist surgeries for our role play, dentist tools using Lego and junk art, we wrote dentist vocabulary in our free writing and read stories about the dentist.
We then learnt all about Autumn and created Autumn acrostic poems, wrote Autumn words, played Autumn bingo, drew Autumn patterns and read Autumn books!
We learnt all about Halloween and played Halloween bingo, created jack-o-lanterns, read Halloween books, wrote Halloween vocabulary and created haunted houses using Lego.
This term we were busy learning all about sets using 2 or more attributes – size, colour, animal, shape etc. We created sets using camels and teddies for our stations.
We learnt all about 2D shapes and we then created houses using cut outs of different shapes.
We used lollipops to create different shape pictures during stations.
We were busy learning all about our numbers and have started to add and combine numbers. We are using games and the “Pocket – it” tool to help us.
