Local History – Athlone Town

Local history trip

Third Class recently visited Athlone town as part of our local history study.

We visited Athlone Castle, SS. Peters and Pauls Church, the Luan Gallery, St Mary’s Church of Ireland and the birthplace of Count John McCormack.

In Athlone Castle, we learned all about the 1691 Siege of Athlone. In SS Peter and Paul’s Church we saw the famous stained glass windows designed by Harry Clarke Studios.

We also visited the statue of Count John McCormack, who was a world famous tenor from Athlone.

We then crossed the ford bridge and visited St Mary’s Church of Ireland and the ruins of the walls of Athlone.

Go Games Trip to Croke Park

Go Games Trip to Croke Park

Our school, along with 3 other schools in Co. Roscommon were chosen to take part in the GAA Go Games pilot scheme which involved children getting a chance to sample Gaelic Football, Hurling/Camogie, Handball and Rounders. A day trip to Croke Park was a reward to the schools who took part.

On Monday the 20th of June Ms Fallon, Ms O’Keeffe and 31 children from 4th and 5th classes went to Croke Park. When we arrived we were welcomed by Pat Culhane the co-ordinator of the programme before setting of on a guided tour of the stadium. After the tour the children had a blitz and got to play 6 matches on the pitch against the other schools from Roscommon.  They children really enjoyed the day and a great time was had by all.
